How Memrise Helps L2 Learners on Learning English (week 4 autonomy)

A Brief Introduction of Memrise

Memrise is a tool for English learning. It is a platform that features a combination of different memory techniques and entertainment elements to achieve the effect of learning while having fun. It offers more than 150 courses in 25 languages.

Advantages VS Disadvantages

lAdvantages

1. All the words and phrases are useful in daily communication or specific situations.

2. Unlike some apps or websites that help learners memorize expressions by repetition, this website introduces videos and natural human voices to bulid multi-sensory memory and arouse learners' interests.

3. AI can serve as your partner to make dialogues under a certain topic. (Its questions and answers can be translated into learners first language and it can also helps learners translate sentences in their mother tongue into English )

lDisadvantages

1. Lack of proficiency tests causes incorrect estimating of the users’ ability level and a mismatch between ability and learning contents.

2. The AI is not intelligent enough so that it sometimes gives users irrelevant replies or it is not logically self-explanatory, so the AI level needs to be improved.

lPotential application in English teaching

Memrise provides both user-generated and pre-made courses for different skill levels. Interactive exercises like flashcards, multiple-choice questions, and audio recordings from native speakers are incorporated into lessons to help students with pronunciation and retention. By ensuring that words and phrases are reinforced at ideal intervals, the spaced repetition algorithm helps to prevent forgetting.

  3. Hi Avery! I like this blog about Memrise, the overall structure is clear and focused, especially in the introduction of the advantages highlighting the multi-sensory learning methods such as video, live voice and AI dialogue, which are very close to the teaching practice. However, it would be more convincing if one or two concrete examples (e.g. expressions in a certain practical scenario) could be included in the advantages section. Meanwhile, I found a small spelling mistake: it should be ‘build’ in the second strength. Overall, I think this is a good blog with solid content and clear direction, and it would be even better with some minor adjustments.

  4. Thanks for the helpful overview of Memrise! I appreciate how you broke down both the advantages and disadvantages—it gives a balanced perspective for teachers and learners considering the tool. Your mention of the AI conversation feature is also interesting, even if it's not perfect yet. The potential application section is useful too, particularly your note on spaced repetition, which is such a key element in vocabulary learning.
