Introducing Speechling: A Customized Platform for Learners to Improve Speaking Skills (week 6)
A Brief Introduction to Speechling Website
Speechling is a language learning platform focused on helping users improve their speaking and listening skills through one-on-one feedback from real coaches. It offers daily pronunciation practice using audio recordings, where users repeat phrases and have conversations with coaches by uploading recordings to native-speaking coaches for personalized feedback.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths:
1. The website uses a one-to-one teaching model to ensure a customized learning experience for students.
2. Uploaded recordings can be freely played, auditioned and re-recorded before uploading. As the recordings need to be sent to the instructor for guidance, students can improve their pronunciation and fluency by practicing several times and also pay more attention to their mistakes and deficiencies in pronunciation.
3. The buttons are cute so students have more interests in exploring their functions.
Weaknesses
1. There is no trial or free version of the website, so some students may not be able to afford the cost of learning.
2. The coach is allocated to each learner randomly and may not always work well with the student.
Implication in Language TeachingImprovement on Speaking Skills
For those learners who struggle with outputting excellent foreign languages, this platform is useful because it will nominate speaking experts in a specific language to teach and give feedback according to learners’ speeches. In addition, there is no need to feel nervous because learners do not meet their coaches face-to-face and they can write down the sentences they will say in a blank box above the recording button.
Improvement on Other Skills
Dictation mode can transcribe coaches’ speeches and feedback for learners to write down what they hear, reinforcing their listening and writing skills. This activity can be taken on a regular basis to fulfill one’s comprehensive ability.
